Partnership for Global Justice: February 2008 Alert
In Kenya, the ugly scenes of violence and chaos have emerged following the country’s disputed presidential election. Western observers have held up Kenya as a dynamo for its high growth rates and macroeconomic stability without considering who benefits from this development. Despite vigorous growth rates of between five and seven percent over the past three years, Kenya is a country marked by disparity. The current crisis reveals symptoms of poverty and socio-economic inequality.
In light of the serious human rights violations and challenges to stable governance that Kenya has experienced in recent weeks, action on our part is important. The international community can base its response to the situation by not only addressing the current political crisis, but also deeper issues of social, political and economic justice. We can call our own leaders to support the demands of Kenyan civil society which are to: Engage in African-led mediation; Accept an independent election review and respect the outcome; Preserve rights of peaceful assembly and media freedom; Stop violence and intimidation by militia and security organizations, no ethnic cleansing, no shoot to kill; Commit to national reconciliation, justice and institutional building.
Former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan is currently in Kenya mediating talks and current Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will arrive tomorrow, February 1st, to further the process.
Send email to: Your foreign minister to support Kofi Annan’s mediation and the efforts of the United Nations to bring about peace in the region.
