Partnership for Global Justice: May 2008 Alert
The United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) will meet in New York from May 5 through May 16, 2008. There are six thematic issues: Africa, Agriculture, Desertification, Drought, Land and Rural development. Each them will be addressed in an integrated manner taking into account economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development.
The impact on the world in food production and the manner in which food is produced is a major concern for us in both Canada and the United States. We need to find ways to safeguard soil, water and biodiversity. We also need to insure that renewable energy industries like ethanol and other biorefineries foster sustainable practices of agricultural production to ensure long-term ecological integrity for further generations and adequate food supplies.
Send postcard to the representative of your country to the UN Commission on Sustainable Development.

Dear ____________
Production of crops and bio-based materials needs to be done in a way that does not exacerbate current environmental problems or create new ones as well as provide adequate food supplies. We need to find ways for emerging renewable energy industries to achieve their potential and be truly renewable by considering economic, social and ecological factors.

Background Information:
- Agriculture touches all our lives wherever we live and how future generations will live.
- Agriculture is not only how we grow food but how we treat those who bring food to our tables
- Agriculture is about the foods we choose for our families and how we make sure the whole human family is fed.
- Catholic teaching about the dignity of work tells us that farmers must be able to support themselves and their families through their work.
- Farmers must be able to survive the risks associated with production and price fluctuations in the market.
- Agriculture is about rural communities and the quality of life in small towns surrounded by farmland.
