On Monday Sister Ana came to the office and we applied to have her speak in Partnership’s name at the Commission on Social Development. She then worked on the statement which can only be 3 min. She will speak in Spanish and is now scheduled to speak tomorrow, 2/7/17.
The following days were spent attending the High-Level Dialogue on the 24th, the Holocaust Education on Educating Against Extremism on the 26th, and the Committee on Teaching About the UN on the 27th. More about these gatherings can be found in the January Newsletter.
On Saturday, January 28, I joined Pax Christi Long Island, for a day of retreat entitled “Hope in a Time of Darkness.” This topic was very timely for all in attendance.
Last week I spent time at the NGO Forum and the Commission on Social Development. It was a week packed with information and interaction. Several individuals from PGJ member organizations were in attendance so it gave us time to interact. On Thursday, instead of attending the Commission I joined a group of people in a rally in Melville requesting that Senator Schumer stand for “clean air, clean water, and clean soil.”
Yesterday, Sunday, was Consecrated Life Day and I joined others at a Mass celebrated by Bishop Barres, Bishop of Rockville Center as of last Tuesday. We then enjoyed coffee and sweets along with a chance to speak briefly with Bishop Barres. He has met with persons representing the Vatican at the UN. He also mentioned the need to educate Latinos so I encouraged him to stress Catholic Social Teaching. He is clearly pastoral in his approach and I look forward to his efforts in our diocese.
